1. Restaurant Management

Young restauranteur, Stephen Lakeman, was recently one of six finalists of a national awards competition. 

Mr Lakekman took over management of the Ness Hotel in Shaldon, Devon, after completing his three-year Higher National Diploma in Restaurant Management.

The prestigious Roast Dinner Award was launched by Mouton Cadet, sponsor of the Old Vic Theatre.  The awards reception was held recently at the Old Vic, where Mr Lakeman was presented with his certificate by the Theatre’s artistic director - Oscar-winning actor, Kevin Spacey.

2. The Award-winning engineer

Former BTEC student named Young Woman Engineer of the Year

27-year old Katy Deacon has been named Young Woman Engineer of the Year.  In 1998 she began a four-year apprenticeship placement and completed her BTEC HND in aeronautical engineering as part of her training.  She went on to study a BEng (Hons) in airport transport engineering and now works for Kirklees Council having recently completed her MSc in engineering.

The judges were particularly impressed by her work on green energy. She has created a renewable energy tool kit to aid architects, engineers and developers to make best use of integrated renewable energy technologies in building development.

At the ceremony, Katy said: “I’d like to go into schools, colleges and businesses to encourage them into engineering and raise its profile. If I can be a role model not just for girls, but boys as well, I’d be delighted,” she said.
